What's a typewriter?

I have a bracelet made of typewriter keys.  My ten-year-old niece was looking at it and asked, “what are these?”

“Typewriter keys,” I told her.  She nodded.

Then she asked:  “What’s a typewriter?”

I can SO clearly recall glancing up and feeling perplexed/annoyed by the proliferation of new billboards promoting their www. sites. "Why are they spending their advertising $$ for such clumsy information??" I wondered, a bit indignantly. (I had never been on the Internet.) "That is soooo never gonna catch on!" "Trust Life's unfolding..."
